How to Adjust the Separation Value

Example images for rejected reason: Bad Searation

Below are actual images of scans that were rejected for 'Bad Separation'.   The images shown below were taken from our Quality Check process.   Following the images are instructions for
setting the temporary separation value and setting the default separation value.   Separation refers to how the BrillianceScope Analyzer program determines the exact outline of the stone in the scan image, separating the gray background of the image square from the stone image itself.   An incorrect separation setting can cause either excess flaring around the perimeter of the stone (not enough separation) or may cause part of the stone image to be missing (too much separation). This can usually be seen in all six Light Views.

Even when the default separation is set correctly, it may be necessary to temporarily adjust the separation setting for very small or very large stones.   Temporary separation settings will be reset to the default separation value when the BrillianceScope Analyzer program is closed and reopened.

When a scan has bad separation, it is recommended to adjust the separation value and rescan it before saving to prevent delays in getting an approval.   If a scan with bad separation is saved, and then the stone is rescanned and saved again, they may both be automatically rejected for 'Duplicate' without us ever seeing the scans in our Quality Check process if the scans are sent to us at the same time.

Important: After changing the separation value it is important to let the next scan finish completely before determining if the separation setting is correct.   Separation is not calculated until all of the images are captured.

The two examples below have too much separation.   Part of the image is missing.   The separation value must be set to a lower value (see instructions below):

The three examples below do not have enough separation.   There is excess flaring around the perimeter.   The separation value must be set to a higher value (see instructions below):
